Stimulus Checks Begin Rolling Off the Presses

Photo: Stimulus Checks Begin Rolling Off the Presses

The first mass production of the 2008 stimulus checks began across the country this week as Vice President Cheney, Secretary Paulson, Secretary Gutierrez, and Treasurer Anna Escobedo Cabral toured different Treasury Department printing facilities. Secretary Paulson visited Kansas City, Mo., and delivered remarks as Treasurer Cabral traveled to San Francisco, Cali. Treasury began issuing stimulus payments last week that will boost the economy and get money into the hands of Americans quickly. More than 7.7 million American households received payments totaling $7.091 billion last week, and the vast majority of payments will be out by the end of June through either direct deposit or paper check. The stimulus package, signed by the President in early February, also includes short-term incentives to bolster business investment and consumer spending. Those who have not yet filed a tax return should do so to receive a stimulus payment by the end of the year. "By the end of June nearly 130 million stimulus payments should be in the hands of Americans, providing an immediate boost to the economy and helping to create more than 500,000 new jobs by the end of the year," said Paulson.
