EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Stay-In-School Program

The Secret Service is a federal law enforcement agency with headquarters in Washington, D.C. and over 125 offices throughout the United States and abroad. Congress charged the Secret Service with two responsibilities, protection of our nation's leaders and criminal investigations. The protective mission of the Secret Service includes protection of the President and Vice President of the United States; their immediate families; former Presidents and their spouses; widows and minor children of former Presidents; major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates and their spouses; and visiting foreign heads of state.

The Secret Service was established in 1865, solely to suppress the counterfeiting of U.S currency. Over the years, its investigative responsibilities have expanded to include the area of counterfeiting of currency and securities; forgery and altering of government checks and bonds; thefts and fraud relating to electronic funds transfer; financial access device fraud; identity fraud; telecommunications fraud; computer fraud; telemarketing fraud; and fraud concerning federally insured financial institutions.

The Secret Service Student Temporary Education Employee Program gives students the opportunity to earn money and continue or resume their education at the same time. Candidates for the Stay-in-School Program will be required to meet financial eligibility guidelines through the State Employment Office, their educational institution's Financial Aid Office, or be certified through the Secret Service Personnel Office.

Eligibility

  • 16 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • U.S. citizen.
  • Enrolled or have been accepted for enrollment during the upcoming semester or quarter as a full-time or part-time student in high school, or in an educational institution not above the baccalaureate level.
  • Working toward a diploma, certificate, or degree.
  • Maintaining a satisfactory academic record of a 2.5 or better cumulative grade point average.
  • Not a son or daughter of a Secret Service employee.

Assignment and Leave

Most assignments are of a clerical nature and no previous experience is required. Students are eligible for paid annual and sick leave. For every 20/24 hours worked, one hour of sick leave and one hour of annual leave will be accrued.

Working Hours

As a stay-in-school employee with the Secret Service, you will work part-time while school is in session and full-time during summers and official school breaks. While school is in session, your work schedule will be limited to a minimum of 15 hours a week and a maximum of 20/24 hours a week. Your working hours are determined by the office to which you are assigned. Under this program, you are eligible for reappointment each year upon verification of your financial need, academic standing, and proof of continuing education.

Salary and Promotions

The pay you receive will depend on the education and work experience you already possess. As you advance in your education, you may be eligible for promotions based on your work performance, grade point average, and credits earned. Your pay is based on the General Schedule (GS) grades 1-4.

Eligibility & Verification for Continued Employment

At the beginning of each Fall Semester/Quarter, each student will be asked to produce a letter of verification from his/her educational institution showing proof of enrollment in school for the upcoming semester/quarter either as a part-time or as a full-time student.

A transcript or grades from the previous semester is required to show that you still maintain a 2.5 GPA or better. You have two weeks after the beginning of the new Fall semester to submit your verification.

Each year you are required to show proof of your financial status to be eligible for the program. Unless you were granted a financial waiver from the Personnel Office, you are required to produce a financial eligibility statement from the State Employment Office or a copy of your financial statement from your Financial Aid office. This is required once a year prior to reaching your anniversary date.
